Airport Bird Management

The Eagle Eye Airport bird management system is a combination of visual products and sound systems that causes problem birds to move away from areas where the system is installed.

It is ideal for landing strips and helipads.

Visual Products:

A combination of two visual products are used to scare the birds away:

Eagle Eye bird reflector:

This product reflects a danger spectrum to birds and they will avoid the area where the Eagle Eye bird scarer is turning It uses a 12 volt solar panel as power source but wind driven units are also available.

Eagle Eye “FlashFlag” with bracket:

   (SA Patent app 2011/07229)

The Eagle Eye “FlashFlag” is a clever piece of innovation that will twist and turn in the wind in such a way that the reflections will give the impression of fire. It is also designed to make birds aware that there is danger in the vicinity and they will eventually move away to a saver area and out of visual sight of the “FlashFlag”.

It is made out of a UV stabilized reflective plastic with a golden color (spectrum) on the one side and silver (spectrum) on the other side. The two spectrums plays an important roll as birds sees in different spectrums than humans. The “FlashFlag” needs sun to work at its best. During cloudy days there will be a noticeable influx of birds but they will retreat as soon as the sun comes out again.

The bracket enables the “FlashFlag” to rotate in the wind in the same direction that the wind blows.

Mounting instructions:

  1. Use a steel dropper or wooden pole that is higher than the area of protection.
  2. Attach the base of the “FlashFlag” bracket to the dropper or wooden pole.
  3. Make sure that the “FlashFlag” is mounted 300 mm above the produce or area to be protected.

With reference to ICAO Doc 9137-AN/898 Part 3 “Bird Control and Reduction”. I refer to chapter 8 “Dispersal Methods” and as to Sec. 8.3 “Visual Deterrents”, 8.3.1 c) “Lights”. Also Sec. 8.3.2, firstly, “The effectiveness of visual deterrents has been assessed primarily in terms of the reduction of damage to crops; however, the techniques may also work in an airport environment. Habituation is a problem with visual deterrents as well as with the auditory deterrents”.

“Transient birds are more likely to be scared by visual deterrents since the chance to habituate to these tactics does not arise. The problem remains with resident birds that are attracted to the airport by its permanent features. A combination of visual and auditory deterrents sometimes has increased effectiveness”.

The Eagle Eye system currently on trail, works, as correctly mentioned, from sunlight reflection as was noted by the research documented. The difference to this is that no other specialised system has ever been researched as deeply as the Eagle Eye project. The prismatic shapes are a combination of 3 layers of metallic overlays that have been scientifically prepared to reflect not white but actually a frequency in the “blue visual range” that filters infrared and ultra violet frequencies at a very narrow and optimum range from the sunlight and not just a reflection of white light. (Note the silvery domes for the lager bird species and yellow, or golden colour for smaller bird species) close investigation will show very differentiating angles that covers a more 3 dimensional area. Research into these wavelengths of light determined the interference within the visual cortex of the brain at these specific wavelengths that irritates the animal’s eye constantly and causes relocating from the area. This result will remain with a removal success rate of between 60 and 80 percent, depending on the location, species involved, amount of units installed in an area and so on. The animal will not habituate and return as the “interference remains an irritant”. This product was researched and developed over a 5 year period In South Africa and is the first of its kind in the world. Eagle Eye has over 1000 succesfull installations to its credit within a wide variety of environments. This is a first within the aviation sector.

With regard the second matter as to the “flashing strobe effect” and the safety concern. Please note that mostly during the day the reflections are focused downwards. Also take note of the ambient reflections from motor vehicles windows that might be taken into consideration in this regard.

The sound system is a combination of electronic sounds, distress calls and predator attack cries. This system creates an uncomfortable environment for most bird species.

Electronic and natural sounds are emitted at irregular intervals for variable lengths of time, preventing problem birds from growing accustomed to the sounds.

This product will keep problem birds away from runways and other open airport areas without interfering with radio traffic.

A twelve volt battery with a solar panel can be used as power source.

Eagle Eye Bird Control has developed a range of visual and audible products to deter birds from unwanted areas. These “systems” of combined products, have been successfully installed at thousands of locations throughout the world with great success.

Birds are sensitive to specific light spectrums from the sun and our visual product range is making use of these spectrums to make the birds aware of danger in the vicinity of the Eagle Eye™ products. As soon as they pick up the reflections of the Eagle Eye™, they will change their line of flight to avoid this perceived danger.

Different Eagle Eye™ spectrum units are offered for different bird species. Each unit is coated with a special surface layer reflecting a spectrum of UV light that deters the relevant bird species. The light reflection doesn’t affect humans or other animals, such as livestock, at all.

Eagle Eye™ does not affect nesting birds. It prevents new birds from entering the area and birds that have left the area from returning.

Eagle Eye™ is an innovative system used to bird-proof urban, industrial and farming areas. It is affordable, easy to install, requires little maintenance, and is very effective. Eagle Eye Bird Control has been working on a range of projects where the Eagle Eye™ has been challenged and tested, both on smaller limited areas and larger widespread areas. We have been delighted by the effectiveness and capacity of the Eagle Eye™ “systems”, as have our clients.

This comprehensive “system” is completely harmless to birds, and makes the birds move to other places by simply changing their behaviour. The innovative system uses reflected light to make the pest birds perceive danger from larger, predatory birds, and birds simply choose an alternative venue and route. Sound systems that are audible will be used in combination with the Eagle Eye™ to make the “system” more effective.

Our Nightmare Sound System is also used successfully to deter bats.

Strobe lights, FlashFlags and Sound Systems are incorporated into the Eagle Eye “system” to make the birds that fly by night aware of danger after sunset.

Installation of the Eagle Eye™ “System”

Before installing any bird deterring system, a comprehensive survey of the requirements must be undertaken. A poorly installed system gives inferior results, often resulting in higher project costs.

As part of our service, when installing an Eagle Eye™ “System”, Eagle Eye Bird Control will complete the project planning and survey, answer any queries and advise on the best bird deterring system to use.

Eagle Eye Bird Control commits to visit the proposed installation site to determine the best solution, together with the client or their representative.
